Abenteuer Orient

Max von Oppenheim und seine Entdeckung des Tell Halaf

In 1899, the Cologne banker's son, diplomat and explorer Max Freiherr von Oppenheim (1860-1946) discovered an Aramaic princely seat from the early 1st millennium B.C. on Tell Halaf, bringing the Habur region on today's Syrian-Turkish border into the focus of archaeological research for the first time. The exhibition catalog revives the long-gone world of the Arameans and presents outstanding archaeological finds that already caused a sensation in Berlin in 2011.

  • The guideline of the publication is Max von Oppenheim’s biography and his lifelong love of the Orient. It also speaks from each and every one of the luxurious Oriental garments and accessories that Oppenheim privately collected. A magnificent selection of these collection pieces is hereby presented for the first time together with Oppenheim’s archaeological discovery. The finds from Tell Halaf, which were destroyed during a night of bombing in Berlin in 1943 and spectacularly restored some 60 years later, not only tell of a 3000-year-old culture, but have also become a moving testimony to contemporary German history.
