The architecture and urban planning of the 1960s continue to shape Berlin’s cityscape to this day. Key urban planning decisions were made in this decade, and numerous remarkable architectures were created that are endangered today. Known and newly discovered original materials documented in this publication illustrate political, social, and architectural visions for the reconstruction of a destroyed metropolis divided by the construction of the Wall. On the basis of selected plans, questions are raised about objectives, similarities and differences in East and West Berlin. These include the developments along the former Stalinallee, at Alexanderplatz, at Breitscheidplatz or in the Märkisches Viertel. In addition, it is shown to what extent the designs reveal an international network of individual authors or how knowledge of the international building scene was reflected.

Destroyed in the Second World War and divided by the construction of the Berlin Wall, Berlin experienced a building boom in the 1960s. Spurred on by a spirit of optimism and euphoria for technology, urban planners and architects designed radically new living spaces for a modern society. Often unjustly criticized as inhumane and unsightly, important testimonies to this building epoch have today disappeared, been reshaped or are threatened with demolition. This publication, produced as part of the exhibition of the same name at the Berlinische Galerie, takes a closer look for the first time at the context in which the buildings and visions developed for East and West Berlin came into being, their formal aspects, and their international references.

[1773,1774,1798

post-2287","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_cat-architecture-urban-planning","product_cat-history-of-architecture","product_cat-urbanism","pa_herausgeber-berlinische-galerie-thomas-kohler-ursula-muller","first","outofstock","taxable","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-simple
