Die Stadt und ihr Grundriss
Zu Form und Geschichte der deutschen Stadt nach deren Entfestigung und Eisenbahnanschluss
If you compare the basic patterns of cities in Germany, you come across a wide range of different characteristics. It becomes apparent that in the majority of them, quite different basic patterns coexist in variations, each representing a particular phase of urban development. This is not to be expected otherwise, since the vast majority of German cities have a history of several hundred years, not infrequently even more than a thousand years. Roughly speaking, most of them were founded in the period between the 8th/9th and the middle of the 14th century, while only a few were founded in the last two centuries: three in the 19th century, two during the Third Reich and four in the former GDR.
