In 1899, the Cologne banker's son, diplomat and explorer Max Freiherr von Oppenheim (1860-1946) discovered an Aramaic princely seat from the early 1st millennium B.C. on Tell Halaf, bringing the Habur region on today's Syrian-Turkish border into the focus of archaeological research for the first time. The exhibition catalog revives the long-gone world of the Arameans and presents outstanding archaeological finds that already caused a sensation in Berlin in 2011.

The finds from Tell Halaf, which were destroyed during a night of bombing in Berlin in 1943 and spectacularly restored some 60 years later, not only tell of a 3000-year-old culture, but have also become a moving testimony to contemporary German history.
