Ruprecht Schleyer consciously places himself in the long tradition of documenting classical material cultural heritage. This tradition has left literary and iconographic traces, especially in the Romantic century, that continue to shape ideas and presentations of ancient ruined landscapes today. Historical and new images stand directly side by side and, partly because of Schleyer’s matter-of-fact style, create a field of tension that recharges itself on every page of the book. The viewer’s eye wanders between past and present, recognizing stylistic differences and searching for continuity and change.

The volume is intended for anyone interested in antiquity, but also for experts in archaeology and art history, who will find a wealth of source material and images here. An introductory essay by archaeologist Wolfgang Filser on the relationship between early (travel) photography and archaeology and an accompanying text by the photographer explain how representation and travel have changed in 200 years.
