Fascicle 15, 1 of the series Iberia Archaeologica deals with the beginnings of metallurgy at Zambujal, a fortified settlement of the Copper Age. Its walls and towers, preserved up to four meters high, still watch over the estuary of the Rio Sizandro, about 50 km north of Lisbon. The history of the settlement begins in the early 3rd millennium B.C. when a stone fortification was built with complex systems of paths and gates and embrasures. The settlement developed into a central place of its settlement chamber, moreover a regional and supra-regional center of the bell cup phenomenon. The history of Zambujal is also associated with the breakthrough of innovation copper and gold metallurgy in the region.

The book is devoted to the question of what role the production and use of metal played in the history of the development of the settlement. It results from a research project of several years, in which metallurgical finds of Zambujal and of neighboring settlements were systematically recorded and studied. The results show, among other things, that Zambujal copper originated in the Upper Alentejo, from where it reached Extremadura along an established import route for amphibolite and other goods. It is mainly simple arsenic copper that was processed into objects in Zambujal in an alloy-specific manner. In addition to the historical and socioeconomic interpretation and classification of the innovation copper metallurgy, the book includes numerous previously unpublished scientific data and a comprehensive finds catalog. In combination with extensively researched data sets of older publications, the book represents a reference work for the Copper Age of the Iberian Peninsula.
