Wasserversorgung in Toledo und Wissensvermittlung von der Antike ins Mittelalter

Akten der Tagung in Toledo vom 24. bis 25. September 2009
Actas del coloquio de Toledo del 24 al 25 de septiembre de 2009

For more than ten years, the Madrid Department of the German Archaeological Institute, in association with the Diputación de Toledo as well as the Real Fundación de Toledo, has repeatedly jointly devoted itself to the topics of this city, which is characterized by the fact that it has always been capital and regia sedes. After city gates (Iberia Archaeologica 8, 2006) and spolia (Iberia Archaeologica 12, 2009), the theme of water management was the focus of the conference, the proceedings of which are presented here as the 19th volume of the series Iberia Archaeologica and which was organized internationally with the notable participation of the German Water History Society (DwhG) and the relevant experts.

  • Toledo not only has one of the few Roman high-pressure pipelines on the Iberian Peninsula, the Roman system with water distributors in the urban area was still functioning until the 14th century. – Always the found Roman building fabric of the Hispanic Visigothic cities is further used, repaired, repaired, always one tries to use the existing. In the process, the knowledge of water must be passed on. Knowledge can be passed on in two ways: via practical transmission, such as through master-journeyman connections in the form of tacit, implicit or everyday knowledge, or via the way of theoretical transmission of discursive knowledge as well as book knowledge. The conference is structured accordingly. In a first part, it will be shown in engineering terms what knowledge is available and, by means of case studies, how this knowledge is applied in different ways over time. In a second, smaller part, the transmission of discursive or book knowledge is considered. The first part is regionally staggered – a methodological approach that characterizes the Toledo conferences as a whole.
