Martin Elsaesser und das Neue Frankfurt
The publication documents in detail the architect's buildings, both realized and those that remained projects, during his time as artistic director of the Hochbauamt in Frankfurt between 1925 and 1932. In addition, it delves into aspects such as Elsaesser's difficult role as a decisive co-designer of the New Frankfurt as well as the economic, political, and personnel conditions of his tenure. The book also approaches Elsaesser as a teacher and (family) man and undertakes excursions into other creative phases of the building artist, who left behind a rich body of work before and few, but salient, buildings after the Frankfurt phase. The analysis of his writings reflects the design views of a practitioner and theoretician who saw himself as a mediator between tradition and modernity. This is supplemented by the most comprehensive catalog raisonné to date of his (re)buildings and designs for Frankfurt between 1925 and 1954.
