The 2012 Special Award was dedicated to the topic of “Integration and Transformation of Technical Infrastructures in Town and Country”. These infrastructures, whether in the field of transport, energy supply, water and waste disposal or communication, are subject to a constant process of change, adaptation and renewal. Mobility does not follow a law of nature, it is a process to be designed. With the transition to a post-fossil mobility culture, the decisive factor for the future of cities will be whether we organize the scarce resources of energy, space and time in such a way that we can simultaneously design livable and sustainable urban development. The special award seeks out innovative solutions for dealing with the above-mentioned tasks in a way that is demanding in terms of building culture.
