Regionalistische Strategien in der Architektur Graubündens
von 1900 bis in die Gegenwart
It is the visible references and the recognizable places that have been shaped by regional building culture right up to the present day that are gaining new significance in the growing field of tension between globalization and regional identity. However, regional building culture is not a question of style, but in the broadest sense means a social and cultural attitude that is aware of the capital of the region and is receptive to regional and global processes. For only in the field of tension between the own and the foreign and in the awareness that the different values of the new and the old are to be understood as potential for development, can an architecture emerge that, connected with the place, contributes to the preservation and continuation of cultural identity.

The focus of this book is the study of regionalist tendencies in the architecture of the Grisons, which become apparent in recurring phases from 1900 to the present. Between 1905 and 1914 in the “Heimatschutzarchitektur” of Nicolaus Hartmann, Otto Schäfer and Martin Risch, after 1945 in buildings by the architects Iachen Könz, Bruno Giacometti and Rudolf Olgiati and currently, among others, in the architecture of Peter Zumthor and Gion A. Caminada. Selected buildings by these architects, which exemplify an architecture that is linked to regional building culture, are analyzed and evaluated in their respective social, historical, geographical and cultural contexts. Especially the newer buildings of the internationally known architects Zumthor and Caminada have made Grisons known to the architectural scene in the last three decades. Thus, the region also stands for an architecture that manages to tie in with old traditions without becoming sentimental and drifting into the folkloristic.
