Gestaltete Sehnsucht
Reiseplakate um 1900
Around 1900, mass tourism was still in its initial phase, but the competition for guests had already begun. So advertisers tried to show what was special about each region in the right light: large-scale travel posters in bold colors and sweeping contours advertised vacations in the mountains with hiking or skiing. Spas attract visitors with their hotel facilities, iodine-rich water and healthy air. Cities stage their landmarks. Modern means of transportation and motorization become a topic, for example with sociable bicycle tours, comfortable train rides or the fast automobile. Mountain railroads and sightseeing flights promise new perspectives. Tour operators offer world tours in airships or on luxury steamships. The historical details on the billboards for fashion, travel utensils, hiking or skiing equipment are also appealing.

The catalog book presents 40 posters on the theme of travel from the Graphic Collection of the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt and discusses them in detail. It thus not only documents the development of the modern poster from its beginnings in the 1880s to the Weimar Republic, but also provides an exciting cultural-historical journey through time. The selection includes famous pioneers of the genre such as Jules Chéret, Alphonse Mucha, Lucian Bernhard, Edmund Edel, Ludwig Hohlwein, Carl Kunst and Julius Klinger. In addition, rare or never-before-published examples of previously unnoticed poster artists can also be discovered. With its large-format posters, the book is a feast for the eyes and takes its readers to the places of longing of times past.
