Kapitalströmung
Perhaps at their core, capital flows determine every change in the world today - not only in economics and politics, but also with regard to social, cultural or ecological developments. Cross-border investment and trade seem to shape all spheres of existence. Driven by the increasing globalization of markets, the import and export of capital - whether in the form of money, intangible and tangible goods, or people - has become an omnipresent system, the inescapable assumption of a necessity or a purpose in itself.

This publication documents the exhibition KAPITALSTRÖMUNG at Kunsthalle Tübingen (March 11 to June 11, 2017). The two parts of the title offer meanings that can be related in different ways to the works of the participating artists. For example, “capital” not only means means of production as well as real, monetary and human capital in the form of goods, securities and labor, but also brings into play the famous theories critical of capitalism by philosopher and economist Karl Marx, which he formulated in 1867 under the title “Das Kapital.” And “flow” can be understood, on the one hand, as the seemingly inevitable, quasi-natural movement of capital and, on the other, as a capitalist trend or organized ideology.
