From May 27 to June 16, works by the artist Álvaro Tavares Guilherme, who was born in 1992 in Luanda, Angola, and grew up in Portugal, will be on display in the gallery space of Wasmuth & Zohlen Verlag. It is the first solo exhibition of the young autodidact in Germany. For the opening, on May 26 at 6 pm, we would like to invite you to Potsdamer Straße 98A.
Álvaro Tavares Guilherme is a painter and poet. He came to Lisbon as a child and moved from there to Berlin in 2018. Since then he lives and works between Berlin, Paris and New York. Álvaro, who says about himself that he always wanted to be a painter, experimented with colors and materials at a young age. Driven by a deep longing to understand and participate in the life of the cities where he lives, he closely observes human interaction and the intricate inner worlds of comedie humaine.
His approach to colors, shapes, figures and signs is direct and blunt, what Alvaro Guilherme himself calls “neo brut”. His attitude is melancholic and reflects his “saudade” (Portuguese: longing ), which touches the question of belonging, identity and relationship with the inner world of objects and people.
In Alvaro Guilherme’s painting the absence of academic, self-referential elements and concepts is evident, generated an immediate effect. We are invited to include the works in our lives like a person who becomes a friend. Behind all the beauty there is despair, as well as an urge to understand and express what lies beyond the surface and what can make it shine.
This is multi-faceted like the characters created by Portuguese author Fernando Pessoa. He is an important reference for Álvaro Guilherme, who also writes poetry. Like his works, they are painted pictures of the soul with an open ending. Hopefully a happy one.
