Wabi-Sabi. Woher? Wohin?

Wabi-sabi is an essential pillar of Japanese aesthetics and was expressed in the classical tea ceremony. While precious utensils, mostly of Chinese origin, were used there at first, in the time of wabi tea the domestic simple was also held in high esteem. The foreign was contrasted with the down-to-earth, the new with the old, the expensive with the cheap, the complicated with the simple. Wabi-sabi describes the “beauty of imperfect, transient and incomplete things, the beauty of undemanding, simple and imperfect things.” Wabi-sabi arises in the mind of the beholder; it is not an inherent quality of things.
What are the historical, as well as the spiritual, metaphysical roots? Can the natural inner beauty of wabi-sabi be captured in words or only in the atmospheric? And is it meaningful or even possible to “make” things wabi-sabi consciously? Does wabi-sabi matter in the modern world, which is characterized by glossy aesthetics and ubiquitous digitalization? Is wabi-sabi even conceivable in the digital realm? Is it not rather the exact opposite? Does it have a future? Would its gradual disappearance even be noticed?
