Since the discovery of the so-called Grave of Philip at Vergina in northern Greece, the monumental Macedonian chamber tombs have been the focus of archaeological research. Until now, however, the focus of interest has been predominantly on individual graves or specific questions. This book finally provides the scientific basis for dealing with this type of tomb, its precursors and its origin. The burial chambers vaulted by wedge stones appeared abruptly in the Greek area in the middle of the 4th century BC in Macedonia. In order to fathom the origin of this revolutionary vaulting technique, the author also discusses wedge stone vaults in Egypt and the Near East.

The catalog includes 224 graves in Greece, Turkey and Cyprus including exemplary antecedents. Nearly 50% were personally re-examined and described by the author. For the first time, detailed comparisons and developments can be seen. The main focus of description and evaluation is on the architectural design of the monuments. Drawings and photographs supplement the accounts, while maps illustrate the distribution of sepulchral buildings in Macedonia and in areas conquered or influenced by Macedonians.
