The Arab dirham was considered a world trade coin in the 9th and 10th centuries - just like the Athenian tetradrachm in the 4th century BC or Central American silver in the early modern period. It is thanks to the rich yield of precious metal from mines in eastern Islamic Central Asia that coins from the Tashkent area in particular have come to light in hundreds of treasure troves from Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. The holdings of the Tübingen University Coin Collection have the merit of not only documenting these world trade coins well, but also equally recording earlier and later coinage of the same region that was only of local importance.

This volume of the Sylloge series (ISSN 0945-4020) includes 660 coins from eastern Uzbekistan, southern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and what is now Chinese Xinjiang (East Turkestan). Silk Road money was dominated by Arabic culture, but under Turkish and Mongol rule allowed Turkish inscriptions in Uighur script and, more rarely, Chinese textual components. Then, under Chinese rule, it was the other way around, Turkish texts in Arabic script remained in the coinage alongside Chinese inscriptions. The coin collection reflects the history of a remote yet important region from the 8th to the end of the 19th century, interrupted by periods of economic and cultural collapse of the cities and the monetary system.
