Studia Numismatica et Islamica in Honorem Lutz Ilisch

Festschrift zum 70. Geburtstag von Lutz Ilisch

In addition to personal words, the Festschrift contains a list of all Lutz Ilisch's publications from 1970 to 2020, including the series Sylloge Numorum Arabicorum Tübingen (SNAT), which has been published since 1993 and was initiated by the jubilarian, and which has comprised 10 volumes since last autumn. The publishing house takes this opportunity to thank Lutz Ilisch for the trustful cooperation. A new SNAT volume, the second on coinage in Damascus, is already in preparation and is scheduled to appear in 2023/2024.

  • This commemorative publication honours the outstanding scholar Dr. Lutz Ilisch, who from 1990 until his retirement in 2017 headed the Research Centre for Islamic Numismatics (FINT) at the University of Tübingen and has long been regarded as an internationally respected luminary in this field. Just as he represented the field of numismatics in a remarkable breadth, this publication on the occasion of his 70th birthday is also characterised by a great diversity of content and methodology in the contributions it contains.

The Festschrift contains contributions with a catalogue character or on find numismatics as well as those on the history of science and art including Islamic architecture. The time frame in which the coins, seals and weights are discussed ranges from the Sasanian to the modern period. With almost 20 authors in German and English, the volume brings together a circle of very different companions, friends and colleagues of Lutz Ilisch from no less than four continents, including coin dealers and professors.
