Berlin Castle – Humboldtforum

Franco Stella

In 2008, Franco Stella, the Italian rationalist of the first hour, was given the task of architecturally realizing the most important national cultural project in the reunified Berlin, the Berlin Palace - Humboldt Forum. After a decades-long dispute over whether it should be a radical new building in today's language or a replica and reminder of the most important baroque building in northern Germany, the German parliament decided that it should be a new building with historical elements: three of Andreas Schlüter's baroque facades in the south, west and north, as well as the legendary "Schlüterhof" were to be reconstructed, while the rest was to be rebuilt in today's architectural language. In this book, architect Franco Stella explains how he succeeded in this contradictory and exciting task and argues that even reconstructed architecture is authentic.
