Cube
New Building With Carbon Concrete
Shortly after the highly acclaimed inauguration, we were happy to publish this book on the world's first carbon concrete house. With its many photos and texts, the book documents the construction and design of the impressive building in Dresden and introduces the partners of the project. It also illuminates, among other things, what one does not see as a viewer of the CUBE: the history and the future of the material combination carbon concrete and the new thinking in building under the sign of climate protection and resource efficiency.

The first house made of Carbon concrete At the end of September 2022, the world’s first house built entirely of carbon concrete was ceremonially opened in Dresden. lt is the result of almost thirty years of research under the direction of Prof Manfred Curbach at the TU Dresden on a building material in the spirit of climate protection and resource efficiency. The book is a documentation of the creation of the CUBE and illuminates the history and potential of the material combination carbon concrete in pictures and text.
Carbon concrete is a building material that is more ecologically sound, durable and retains its value better than reinforced concrete. The curved and twisted roof-wall construction Twist is also highly interesting from an aesthetic point of view, which gives the builder hope that shell construction with carbon concrete is experiencing something of a renaissance in the building industry. The book is aimed equally at architects, engineers and builders who are actively involved in the ecologically oriented innovation process in the construction industry.Read in:

Manfred Curbach
is director of the Institut für Massivbau (Institute of Concrete Structures) at the Fakultät Bauingenieurwesen (Faculty of Civil Engineering) of the TU Dresden and the director behind CUBE. Since 2014, he has been chair of the board of the research project C3 – Carbon Concrete Composite, that with the help of a consortium and many research partners, is developing the composite material carbon concrete and bringing it to practice. For his research on carbon technology, Manfred Curbach was awarded, together with Chokri Cherif and Peter Offermann, the German president’s German Future Prize for Technology and Innovation. In 2019, he was awarded the Carl-Friedrich-Gau-Medaille, awarded by the Braunschweigischen Wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft (BWG).Dr.-Ing. Michael Frenzel
Since 2010 Doctor of Engineering Michael Frenzel has been a scientific associate at the Institut für Massivbau at the TU Dresden and works in the research areas of carbon concrete and lightweight concrete construction. Since 2017 he has directed the project “Ergebnishaus des C3-Projektes – Cube”. He and his team coordinated the research and development work, supported and advised the participating planners in the construction and structural planning, performed the building contractor’s tasks and executed the required carbon concrete, specific material and building parts development. In addition, he obtained the building permits and material approval in each case for the realization of the project. He was the key participant in the public tender and awarding of the building project and oversaw the construction until completion. He commercially and financially developed the project and was a critical contact person and correspondent for the funding sources, including sponsors and institutions.Gunter Henn
was a professor of industrial architecture at Technische Universität Dresden from 2000 to 2015. The architectural firm Henn, which focuses on research, production, and office buildings, was founded in Munich by Gunter Henn in 1979, following in his father’s footsteps, Walter Henn. For CUBE, Henn developed the concept design. For Volkswagen, Henn realized the Gläserne Manufaktur was located near Dresden’s Gro.er Garten.Sandra Kranich
Sandra Kranich is responsible for press and publicity for C3 Carbon Concrete Composite, e. V., with an emphasis on networking and strategy. She managed all communication and coordinated all press and advertising related to CUBE from the start of construction.Dipl.-Ing. Marén Kupke
is managing director of AIB GmbH Architekten Ingenieure Bautzen. Since 2008, she has been working in textile concrete research and development. In 2010 and 2011, she was manager of the network texton, an association of companies interested in textile and carbon concrete. For CUBE, she was responsible for general planning.Matthias Medack
was managing director of AIB GmbH Architekten Ingenieure Bautzen and was responsible for the construction supervision of general planner AIB GmbH for CUBE.Hendrik Ritter, Graduate engineer,
is the on-site structural engineer of Assmann Beraten + Planen GmbH, especially for the concrete pre-fabrication and structural engineering planning. Since 2014, he has been involved in textile concrete research and development. He was responsible as the director of structural engineering for the planning and construction of CUBE.Silke Scheerer
is a research associate at the Institute of Concrete Structures at TU Dresden. After completing her doctorate on the multi-axial load-bearing behaviour of high-performance, lightweight aggregate concrete, she became the senior managing engineer at the Institute in 2010 and has been head of quality assurance since 2018. Her research interests are primarily in lightweight concrete construction and the preservation of structures through subsequent strengthening or load tests in existing structures. Her activities also include public relations and the preparation of conference proceedings and publications.Rudolf Spindler
is editor-in-chief of BB 2070 – Magazin für Sädtebau und urbanes Leben and carries out numerous conversation and discussion formats and Berliner Städtebaugespräche or Metropolengespräche, for the Architekten- und Ingenieurverein zu Berlin-Brandenburg or Fachhochschule Potsdam.Matthias Tietze
is a research associate at Institut für Massivbau der TU Dresden in the Forschungsgruppe Carbonbeton Zwanzig20. In addition, he is the business director of the industry association C3 Carbon Concrete Composite e.V. His dissertation deals with identifying and overcoming market barriers in construction for new technologies to develop an economically feasible value creation chain for carbon construction elements in the realm of prefabrication. Since 2019, he has been responsible for coordinating and implementing the building of CUBE.
