In 1925, Lord Mayor Ludwig Landmann appointed Ernst May as the city's head of construction and Martin Elsaesser as the artistic director of the structural engineering department in Frankfurt. The most urgent task was to alleviate the housing shortage from a social point of view. May brought numerous renowned architects to Frankfurt for this purpose, and in just a few years they created a considerable stock of buildings in the New Objectivity style. After only five years, May and many other architects left the city; Elsaesser terminated his contract prematurely in 1933. They left behind a legacy of New Building that can only be compared with Berlin.

The Frankfurt-based photo artist Matthias Matzak began documenting this building heritage with his camera in 2008. In this book, he presents an impressive selection of his images, enriched with numerous historical texts by the architects involved. His emphatically subjective view of the building stock goes far beyond mere documentation. “My goal is to reflect the essence of architecture in my pictures, not just to depict it” says Matzak.
This illustrated book demonstrates this approach in around 230 large-format color images and includes texts by Ernst May, Martin Elsaesser, Adolf Meyer, Ferdinand Kramer, Mart Stam, Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, Joseph Gantner, Karl Schwarz, Theodor Heuss, Christoph Mohr, DW Dreysse, Konrad Elsässer and Claudia Quiring.Read in:
