Antonio Monestiroli stands in the Italian tradition of designing and building architects, who at the same time gained influence as architectural theorists and teachers of architecture. It is irrelevant to what extent his reputation owes more to theory, i.e. his writings, or to practice, which of course includes his designs as well as his buildings. From the beginning, around the 1970s, theory and practice formed a unity in his work: the written, the designed, and the built were placed on an equal footing and interwoven with one another in terms of content. Theory provides the intellectual background that practice brings to life.
In nine lectures, Monestiroli presents a rational theory of design, ranging from a comparison of different architectural definitions to the experiences of classicism and modernism to the question of style in architecture and art. In doing so, his ideas of architecture and the city are committed to modernism. The German first publication of the title appears as the 2nd volume of the series “Materialien zu Geschichte, Theorie und Entwurf städtischer Architektur”.Read in:
