The illustrated book shows the development of East Berlin from the rubble, the demolition, the restoration, the renewal of urban structures, to cultural, sports and mass housing buildings in some completely unknown details. Above all, the discarded and never realized plans, which have survived in models and drawings, can contribute to a new overall view of the urban development of the former capital of the GDR. The photographs, most of which are being published for the first time, are taken from the former East Berlin Magistrate’s Archive, which has become part of the Berlinische Galerie’s architecture collection.
