Established in 1979, the award honors urban development projects implemented in the Federal Republic of Germany that stand out for their sustainable and innovative contributions to urban development in an urban and rural context. The prize is awarded in two categories: In addition to the “classic” urban development prize, there is also a special prize that serves to accentuate particularly urgent current fields of action in urban development and urban planning. The theme of 2014 was “New Ways in the City”: integrative and forward-looking approaches in linking more advanced modes of transport with new spatial qualities and mobility systems.
