STADT BAUEN 7
Deutscher Städtebaupreis 2018
This volume in the STADT BAUEN series of the German Academy of Urban and Regional Planning documents the German Urban Design Award 2018 and at the same time presents a record of achievement in urban planning in Germany - in response to current problems of social change. Associated with the award ceremony in Mainz was the symposium Places of Education and Culture in Urban Contexts on the theme of the Special Award 2018, which is also documented in this volume. The knowledge society of the digital age poses forward-looking tasks of spatial design and technical innovation. In the future, this will require a high degree of sensitivity for the qualities and potentials of existing buildings. This volume presents projects and concepts that show how existing urban ensembles for education and culture can offer new ways of conveying knowledge and cultural participation in structural change, for example through better functional networking, urban integration, traffic and open space planning.

This volume in the STADT BAUEN series of the German Academy of Urban and Regional Planning documents the German Urban Design Award 2018 and at the same time presents a record of achievement in urban planning in Germany – in response to current problems of social change. Associated with the award ceremony in Mainz was the symposium Places of Education and Culture in Urban Contexts on the theme of the Special Award 2018, which is also documented in this volume. In the spirit of the European Heritage Year 2018 Sharing Heritage, the special prize is dedicated to the treatment of urban ensembles from the four decades after 1949. In both German states, the strengthening of education and culture as the basis of social development gained increasing importance and provided important impulses for urban development.
