This volume in the series "Stadt Bauen der Deutschen Akademie für Städtebau und Landesplanung" documents the German Urban Design Award 2020 and at the same time presents a record of achievement in urban planning in Germany, in response to current problems of social change. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the German Urban Design Award, the Special Award 2020 is dedicated to contributions that were honored with prizes and awards between 1980 and 2010. The projects were evaluated and the Special Award 2020 was awarded to some of these contributions. Thus, in retrospect over the period of a generation, a panorama is presented of the achievements of German urban design that were considered outstanding at the time.
