Ruth Bernhard. Fotografien – Photographies

1930 - 1976

The life and work of Ruth Bernhard (1905-2006) are linked to the history of North America's most important photographers, Ansel Adams, her lifelong friend and teacher Edward Weston, as well as Immogen Cunningham and Dorothea Lange. But in Germany, the work of the Berlin-born photographer has yet to be discovered. This catalog is the first publication ever to present a cross-section of her work, which spans more than four decades, including both nudes and other subjects that form an essential part of her artistic photography. She became famous for the style and staging of her nudes. Ansel Adams calls her the "greatest nude photographer" ever. She was one of the first women to emancipate the female nude from the male gaze. Her two photographs "In the Box Vertical" and "In the Box Horizontal" are revolutionary: the nude in a cardboard box. She also went down in history for her studio photographs, in which she gave depth to models and objects with a sophisticated use of light. Her works are in the collections of major museums in the United States, Europe, Japan and Mexico.
