100 Jahre (Groß-)Berlin und seine Zentren
After the founding of (Greater) Berlin in October 1920, the system of centers in Berlin changed fundamentally: In addition to the historic center, the New West around the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church gained in importance. A legacy of the imperial era were many medium-sized, small and micro centers in the inner city as well as on the periphery, for example in Weißensee or Frohnau. Where should the main center be located, how should it be designed? Should there be one at all? In 1920, Greater Berlin lacked resources and forces; after 1933, the Nazis planned a monumental new center. In the wake of Berlin's division, two rival centers were developed: around Alexanderplatz and around Breitscheidplatz. With the fall of the Wall, the question arose again: Where and what is the Berlin center?
